A great team (horse/rider combination) should appear to function as one unit, performing the movements effortlessly. It should appear as though the rider is sitting quietly aboard the horse who is executing the movements all on his own!

Dressage equals rhythm, regularity and collection through straight and bending lines, lateral work, and transitions like a ballerina flowing from one movement to the next. The rider drives the horse into soft hands that allow the horse to come up into the bridle, following the natural motion of the head and creating impulsion. Collection requires strength and develops slowly.

In dressage competition, the riders perform tests. They guide their horses through a series of movements. The horse’s movements should be smooth, precise, and graceful. The tests are graduated for both horse and rider from Training Level through Fourth Level (the National USDF Tests), and from Prix St. George to Intermediate I & II and Grand Prix (the International Equestrian Federation tests).
